CLAUSE

Noun clause is a dependent clause that functions as a noun.  This noun clause can function as subject or object of a clause or a phrase in another.  It acts as a noun, it can be replaced with the pronoun “it”.

Example:

  • I forgot the fact. (Noun)
  • I forgot it. (Pronoun)
  • I forgot that the fact was very important. (Noun clause)

 

Formula Noun Clause

Noun clause can be preceded by a noun clause markers in the form of question word, if or Whether, and that. As examples of noun clause to another clause, along with details of his marker can be seen in table as follows.

Marker                       : Question Word

Details             : what (ever), what (time, kind, day, etc),  who (ever),  Whose,  Whom (ever),       which (ever),  where (ever),  when (ever),  how (long, far, many times, old, etc).

Examples of Noun clause of the sentence

  • The class Listened carefully what the teacher had instructed.
    (The whole class listen carefully what the teacher instructed.)
  • The kitten Followed wherever the woman went.
    (The kitten followed wherever she went.)
  • Many people imagine how many time the man was failed before success.
    (Many people imagine how many times he failed before success.)
  • Where does Andy live?
    (Where Andy live?) I wonder if he lives in West Jakarta.
    (I think he lives in West Jakarta.)

Marker        : if or Whether

Detail          :  typically used to sentence answers yes-no question

Examples of Noun clause of the sentence

  • Is Andy live on Dewi Sartika Street?
    (Did Andy lived on the street Dewi Sartika?) I do not know if he live on Dewi Sartika Street or not.

or

 

  • I do not know Whether or not he lives on Dewi Sartika street.
    (I do not know if he lived on the street Sartika or not.)

 

Detail          :  usually that-clause to mental activity. The following list of verb in the main clause is usually

Examples of Noun clause of the sentence

  • I think that the group will arrive in an hour.
    (I think the group would arrive in an hour.)

Marker        : That

Detail          :  verb in the main clause is usually followed by that-clause: Assume, believe, discover, dream, guess, hear, hope, know, learn, notice, predict, PROVE, Realize, suppose, suspect, think

Examples of Noun clause of the sentence

Many people proved that the man was a big wild.
(Many people have to prove that he is a big liar.)

 

Function Noun Clause

Here is an example sentence of each function noun clause.

Function         : Subject of a verb

Examples of Noun clause of the sentence

  • What she cooked was delicious
  • That today is his birthday is not right

Function         : Subject complement

  • Examples of Noun clause of the sentence
  • The fact is that she is smart and dilligent.
  • A teacher must be whoever is patient.

Function         : Object of a Verb

Examples of Noun clause of the sentence

  • Diana Believes that her life will be happier.
  • I want to know how Einstein thought.

Function         : Object of a preposition

Examples of Noun clause of the sentence

  • The girl comes from where many people there live in poverty.
  • He will Attend the party with whichever fits to his body.
